Stand with Hannah before MPs vote on assisted dying

Hannah is 38, has terminal cancer and wants MPs to listen to people like her before they vote on assisted dying on 11 September. Hannah is 38 and living with terminal cancer. She has a three-year-old son, Theo, and wants as much time with him as possible.

The cancer has spread to her brain and cerebrospinal fluid. She has already lost the sight in her left eye and knows that, as her illness progresses, she could lose more of the independence and abilities that make her feel like herself.

Hannah does not want to die. She wants the choice not to endure suffering when her quality of life has gone.

On 11 September, MPs will vote at the Second Reading of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. This is the Bill’s second journey through the House of Commons, after it was passed by MPs last year but deliberately run out of time in the House of Lords.

We only have the summer to reach as many MPs as possible, make sure they understand what is at stake and help people like Hannah speak directly to those with the power to change the law.

Hannah spent her career working in policy and campaigns. She knows from experience how much work it takes to turn public support into real change. Since sharing her story with My Death, My Decision, she has also seen first-hand the work involved in making sure terminally ill people are heard by MPs, journalists and the wider public.

“I do not fear death. What I fear is losing my independence, my faculties and everything that makes me ‘me’. Most of all, I fear my son’s strongest memory of me being when I am no longer able to play with him, read to him or make him laugh. I have a nice life. But I only want it when it’s nice. When the time comes, I want the options there and to be able to use them. I do not have endless time to wait for politics to catch up. I want the choice to make a plan for my own death, on my own terms, as I have lived my life. That is all I am asking for.”
